As first responders mourn fallen officer, new details of Westmoreland County police shooting emerge

A criminal complaint against the accused killer of St. Clair Township Police Officer Lloyd Reed revealed additional details about both the circumstances of the deadly shooting and what defendant Ray Shelter told investigators about why he fired the deadly shot. Meanwhile, several dozen people, including firefighters who were among the first responders to the scene, gathered in a park across the street from the New Florence, Westmoreland County, location of Saturday's shooting for a candlelight vigil Sunday evening. "With these guys showing here, it shows the brotherhood," said Capt. Chuck Steiner Of the New Florence Fire Department. "Officer Reed was a very good friend of mine. Very dedicated to his job, loved children." Steiner said he felt "deep sadness" at Reed's death, and said his children knew the officer. "He was an awesome guy. He was kind to everybody. Never once shied. He always had a good word to say to you," said Assistant Chief Ken Steiner of the New Florence Fire Department. "He played ball up at the St Clair Manor at the substation with all the kids. He was a very friendly person. He's going to be sadly missed by everybody." "It doesn't hit until after we leave the scene. That's whenever everything sort of clicks in and you realize everything that happened, "said Kyle Miller, assistant chief of the Seward fire company. He said Reed was "always kind, would do anything . Give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. I just can't believe it." Reed was taken to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, where he died from a single gunshot wound to the chest. Though he was wearing a protective vest, the bullet entered from the side and was not blocked by the vest. Sunday afternoon, a procession of nearly 20 police cars escorted Reed's body to a funeral home. The criminal complaint said Shetler's girlfriend, Kristen Luther, called police because he was intoxicated and breaking things while they were arguing and shoving each other inside a home on Ligioner Street in New Florence. The complaint said Luther later told investigators it was after she told Shetler she was calling police that he got out the long gun and went outside. She told police that she could hear someone repeatedly yelling, "Ray, put down the gun, put down the gun." Luther told investigators Shetler began yelling at the officer and took steps toward the the officer while armed with the weapon. She said the officer shot at Shetler, Shetler shot the officer, and the officer fell to the ground. A Seward Borough officer then fired a shot at Shetler, and Shetler took off running. When he captured after a six-hour manhunt, Shetler had a gunshot wound to his shoulder. The criminal complaint said Shetler told police he was confronted by an unknown man pointing a gun at him, that man began shooting, and so he returned fire. Shetler told investigators he did not know it was a police officer. State police are scheduled to hold a news conference Monday to release additional information about the case.
